Having a sturdy workbench can make projects easier and safer. below is a step-by-step pictorial to help you build this project.

One can use this workbench for building all types of projects and can also be used as a planting bench. Store tools and supplies on the lower shelf. The overall dimensions of four feet by two feet will fit nicely in your garage or basement.

The cost of lumber can vary week to week but in most cases it shouldn’t vary to much. Most suppliers will cut larger stock to fit in your vehicle and you might have to buy a full sheet of plywood that could add to the cost, you can use the extra stock to build other projects. If you don’t have a power saw you can use a hand saw. Use a level or a 2X4 to make straight cut lines. The overall dimensions are 2′ x 4′ x 34″.

This project should take a half day to complete.

Skill Level One hammer: Novice
Five hammers: Experienced
Raw material: Five 8’-2X4’s (construction grade). Two 2’X4’X1/2” pieces of plywood (construction grade). One pound box of 1 5/8” deck screws. One pound box of 3” deck screws.

Tools: Circular saw (hand saw or miter saw), drill, Jig saw, tape measure, “Speed Square,” pencil. hammer, clamps, 4′ level if you need to make long cuts. For raw materials see figure one above.

Step 1: (no photo)

Cut two pieces of plywood two feet by four feet and place in a safe place. When using power equipment always wear safety glasses and never wear loose clothing and a long sleeve shirt.

Step 2: Start with the legs. Mark one of the 2X4’s to 34” and then cut all legs. Mark and cut the four side stretchers to 24” and the four front stretchers to 45”.

Step 3: Cut all the stock to length and set aside. If using a hand saw for this step make sure that legs are cut straight because you want them to sit level.

Step 4: Mark all four legs six inches from one end. Use this line to line up the two front stretchers that holds the bottom shelf.

Step 5: Lay two legs and one front stretcher on the floor. Use the Speed Square to square all legs and stretchers.

Step 6: Drill four holes. You’ll repeat this step to attach all stretchers to the bench base.

Step 7: Screw in one 3” deck screw on all four outside corners of the legs.

Step 8: Check the diagonal measurement (see top photo). Check this number on the other side. Using a hammer tap one side until both measurements are the same and then screw in the remaining twelve screws.

Repeat this step for the other bench front.

Step 9: Pre-drill four holes in the 24” side stretcher. Use the Speed Square to plumb the stretcher and screw all four stretchers to the two frames you just built.

Step 10: Turn each half upside-down and place them together.

Step 11: Use a clamp to hold the side stretcher and screw in four 3” deck screws. Repeat this step until all side stretchers are attached.

Step 12: Note how the corners are joined. This type of over-lapping 2X4 joint is quite strong. Pre-dill the holes helps prevent splitting.

Step 13: Now attach the 2’X4’ plywood top using 1 5/8” deck screws, spaced every 8”.

Step 14: The bottom shelf requires a notch at each corner, to fit around the legs. The notches should be cut to 3 1/8” X 5 1/8”.

Step 15: Slide the shelf in at an angle.

Step 16: Screw the shelf to the base, spacing the 15Ú8” screws every eight inches. Use a clamp to hold the shelf in place, and your done.
