Custom Sanding Block

HOW TO: Create a Custom Sanding Block for Molding

For this how-to we create a sanding block to match a molding profile by using a quart milk container to form the rough shape of the sanding block.

Before you begin, make sure that the area of the molding you are duplicating is free of debris and paint chips. If you do not clean the debris and chips they will transfer to the molding profile.

Cut away the sides of the milk container enough to lay flat over the molding.

Place masking tape around the container cutout to limit seepage from the sides and fill to the top and press firmly down on the molding. Make sure the Fix-It-All is completely covering all the contours.

Place a piece of wax paper over the molding and tape it in place. It’s a good idea to tape the molding down to keep it from moving while the block is drying.

Next, let the compound dry for at least one hour. Once dry, remove the block and turn it upside down to let the inside compound dry.

Mix only enough Fix-It-All to fill the container to the consistency of peanut butter. Now check to see how easy the block moves on the molding. If you have a lot of resistance sliding the block, take a piece of sandpaper with the coarse side up and sand the inside of the block until it slides easily along the molding. It is wise to use the thinnest sandpaper available. Test for mobility. Fix-It-All is cheap. If your first attempt doesn’t produce the full relief, start over.

Have fun sanding!
