How Long Does it Take to Hang a Door?

Hanging a new door is one of those jobs that can go smoothly and take about two hours for an internal door. However, security doors and glazed doors can be a little more complex.

In some cases, it's worth using a professional contractor or carpenter, especially if you need to adjust the door frame or don't have the tools required to plane edges.

This guide explains how long it typically takes to hang a door, the equipment you'll need, and considerations to ensure your project goes to plan.

Factors Impacting How Long it Takes to Hang a Door

If every door frame and door were the same material and size, it would be much easier to hang a replacement door and estimate how long it will take!

Many things can affect the duration of this project, such as:

  • The condition of the existing frame and lining.
  • How heavy the door is to move.
  • Whether the frames are perfectly straight and square.
  • The locking or handle mechanisms you wish to use.

While we've mentioned that a simple inside door takes about two hours, you're looking at five or six hours for an external door.

Internal doors are quicker since they are lighter, usually have far fewer locks, and don't require lots of finishes like weatherproofing, caulking and flashing.

Other Considerations in Hanging a Door

Heavy doors and those with double or triple glazing are invariably at least a two-person job.

These panels' sheer weight and size mean that it's not advisable to attempt the work yourself since there is a substantial risk of injury or dropping the door.

Fire doors and safety doors also need to have greater movement than a standard internal door and may have specific installation requirements to ensure they provide sufficient protection.

You'll also be able to hang a door faster if you have all the equipment you need to hand:

  • First, you'll need a crowbar to remove the old frame and trims, making sure not to cause damage if you intend to reinstall it.
  • Second, use a level and set square (quality carpenter's tools are best since they're made from rigid metal). You'll use these to square the opening and ensure that the floor is perfectly level.
  • If the opening isn't perfect, that might mean rebuilding the opening or planing a wooden door to slot into the space.
  • Installing the frame requires wooden shims placed close to the hinges. You'll need a hammer and nails to attach the frame and shims to the studwork, using your level to check everything is square.
  • A box cutter or wood chisel is the easiest way to trim any exposed shims.
  • Once the frame is finished and accurate, you can screw the hinges to the frame and then to the door - and your newly hung door is complete.

We've discussed the tools required to hang a new wooden door, but plastic, metal or solid wood doors may require different equipment.

The Benefits of Hanging a Door Properly

Hanging a door properly and taking enough time to get it right is worthwhile because:

  • Badly hung doors can swing on their hinges or become stuck shut.
  • Locks and door handles must match accurately with the frame to work correctly.
  • Uneven doors will let in draughts and can even pose a fire hazard.
  • A door that hangs on the hinge will eventually fall away, pulling the screws from the frame.

Most door hanging projects take longer than expected because the opening or frame isn't level or square, and therefore doesn't fit the door correctly without making adjustments.

It's also important to build in about 3 mm of clearance between the door and the lining to avoid it getting stuck or jammed.

Before starting work, we'd recommend taking careful measurements and using a level to see if there are any adjustments required - don't forget to factor in threshold strips on the floor!

FAQs - How Long Does it Take to Hang a Door?

Below we've answered some of the frequently asked questions about hanging a door in your property!

Can I Hang a Door Myself or Should I Hire a Professional?

It depends on the type of door and the materials. Hanging an internal wooden door is relatively straightforward, so you can usually do the work yourself.

Pre-hung doors already have all the fixtures and a ready-made door frame. However, aluminium, glass and composite doors can be extremely heavy and aren't as simple to hang yourself.

If you don't have carpentry skills and need to custom-build a door frame or are fitting an external door with security elements, it's often advisable to hire somebody to ensure the door is hung correctly.

How Long Does it Take a Carpenter to Install a New Door?

Again, there are many variables. Still, a standard door will take about one or two hours to hang, depending on how much work is required.

Things like cutting and trimming take a little longer but are worthwhile to achieve a newly hung door that fits snugly into the frame.

Most door suppliers offer delivery and installation, so if you're unsure about hanging a door yourself, you can usually opt for an inclusive door hanging service.

Can You Hang a Door in an Existing Frame?

Yes, if you've got a good quality door frame and wish to hang a new door without replacing it, this is certainly possible.

However, it can be fiddly to match a new door with a frame if the opening isn't exactly square, so it can take longer to plane the edges on a new door than it would to fit a new frame.

Pre-hung doors come complete with the frame and door, so they're the quickest option if you need to replace a door fast.

How Much Does it Cost to Hire Someone to Hang a Door?

Prices depend on the type of door - an internal door will usually cost around £50 to £70 per door, including fitting the hinges, hanging the door, attaching handles and checking the door swings perfectly.
